This is where Nina and two young actors
named Hans and Marie have come together to leave behind the winter cold for a few days and do some screen tests
for a film. Nina is a searcher; she wants her film to make feelings visible and intends to portray love by showing real
sex. But the more blurred the borders between fiction and reality become, the less Nina seems inclined to make the
film at all. Hans, who knows Nina from a brief encounter a long time ago, senses that she is searching for something
else. Nonetheless, he and Marie both agree to go along with the play-acting. So far, each is convinced that they are
pulling the strings. But Nina’s strategies of seduction weave an ever-tightening web around her protagonists. Nina’s
credo that they should not play themselves or anyone else soon becomes a trap for Hans and Marie. No wonder that
it becomes almost impossible to decipher where the acting ends and reality begins. The further Nina sets off down a
path to an unknown destination, the more the actors shield themselves from each other and keep their feelings to
themselves. Their longing for the outside world is a palpable force, but each attempt to open up to each other ends
in an emotional blow below the belt. Without a script, communication becomes balancing act; coolness and distance
would seem to be the only adequate means of protection. In this world, failure can only lead to a bittersweet happy
ending.

Cast

Nina Miriam Mayet
Marie Lana Cooper
Hans Matthias Faust
and
Laura Tonke (Baader, Wintersleepers)
Arno Frisch (Funny Games

document.observe('dom:loaded', function() { wSlideshow.render({elementID:"333005082821934799",nav:"thumbnails",navLocation:"left",captionLocation:"bottom",transition:"fade",autoplay:"0",speed:"5",aspectRatio:"auto",images:[{"url":"2\/8\/4\/8\/2848622\/4124775.jpg","width":333,"height":222},{"url":"2\/8\/4\/8\/2848622\/5133383.jpg","width":333,"height":222},{"url":"2\/8\/4\/8\/2848622\/5244627.jpg","width":166,"height":250},{"url":"2\/8\/4\/8\/2848622\/5241007.jpg","width":166,"height":250}]}); As far as I was concerned, he answered his own question: if sexy has become synonymous with pornography, then that clearly reflects the urgency of having a film festival dedicated to it’s exploration as a concept.

Using the word ‘sexy’ as opposed to ‘eroticism’ seems to be a deliberate decision by the festival organisers. By using ‘sexy’ they attempt to re-appropriate the word out of the hands of advertisers and marketeers who have (especially in the last few decades) always sought to align notions of sexiness with consumerism. This is where modern pornography comes in. Sexy, according to the standards porn and advertising set (there’s no denying how mainstream fashion and beauty in the last 5 years have been strongly influenced by the aesthetics of porn) equates that women have to spend money bleaching their hair and putting in extensions, fake nails, breast implants etc. Without this financial dispension, you aren’t conforming to what apparently constitutes sexy these days. In pornography, ‘sexy’ is homogeneous. Female porn stars resemble one another eerily, like alien robots whose sole function is to fake pleasure. There is no sensuality or eroticism and sadly we seem to be falling for it.

For me sexiness in the cinema has always been about well executed anticipation and the presence of crackling chemistry between actors (Bogart and Bacall in Key Largo for example). Watching a sex act onscreen (either simulated or unsimulated) is more often than not incredibly dull and terribly unerotic. Films which avoid this route altogether are usually far more provocative and effective. Meanwhile, as porn becomes more and more embedded into mainstream culture, we seem to have forgotten entirely how diverse sexuality can be (again as a result of porn aesthetics) and to that end, that sexiness in cinema doesn’t have to necessarily mean onscreen sex. I’m optimistic about the potential of the Sexy International Film Festival which as a general theme has unlimited possibilities. Certainly it will be a festival to remind us that the true meaning of sexiness in the cinema has really has nothing to do with fake breasts and the money shot.

By Darcy Harrington
(Not her real name)

Winners for the 2010 Sexy International PARIS Film Festival

http://www.sexyfilmfestparis.fr/1/post/2010/07/winners-for-the-2010-sexy-international-paris-film-festival.html

http://www.sexyfilmfestparis.fr/1/post/2010/07/winners-for-the-2010-sexy-international-paris-film-festival.html#comments

Uncategorized

We are proud to announce the winners of this years festival. A tour followed of London, Paris, San Fransisco and New York with a showcase of the best films from Melbourne. In 2009 the French version of the festival was established to focus on primarily Francophone content as well as devoting sessions to internationally panoramas. Despite the many film festivals around the world, and believe me, there are thousands, few focus on these themes in one festival - Sex, Sexuality, Love and relationships, and in particular France, the sexiest country on the planet, which is why we believe this festival is perfect for Paris.
We will bring together cinema, performance and music for four days of screenings, music, and performance all exploring Sexy.

JUNE 24 - 27 2010
LE GRAND ACTION CINEMA
5, rue des Ecoles, PARIS 75005

In Oct of 2008, the first SIFF-Paris took place at Cinema L'Archipel. It was small but it proved that regardless of its size, people were interested. So we are invigorated the idea and in 2009 re-invented the festival with our goal - to a have world class programme of films that entertain, SIPFF 2010 is coming in the last week of June and we need your help. From bookings, to transportation, to marketing and promotions, equipment and venue rentals, hotels and hospitality, the costs associated with producing the festival are huge. With corporate sponsors not willing to put their money in, (especially for a second year event), and government cultural funds not available for us, we need every kind of support to make this the best festival for this year, and for the future.

Our program for 2010 is huge with more than 50 films in our programme. Along with our Francophone and International shorts programme we are also hosting retrospectives including a panorama of Australian short films, and a programme of Francophone Women in Cinema curated by Pippa Rimmer. On top of that we have French premieres, live music performances and soirees all themed to something sexy, which is sure to entice all. This is an ambitious project, and with your help, we can make it happen and keep it happening every year with even more wonderfully high quality sexy films and live performances.

EVEN THE SMALLEST DONATION HELPS!! Now used to describe everything from cars to stationary, it seems to have something to do with a level of excitement or attractiveness which a thing or person emits. A TV commercial for some sort of self help product in Oz recently asked me, ‘Are you sex confident?’ I’m not really sure what that means but all I can say is that it’s definitely a subjective experience. One girl’s Brad Pitt is another’s Patrick Stewart. I certainly didn’t think ‘Sexy Beast’ was particularly sexy, but someone must have.

For me personally it’s a mix of attractiveness and mystery, where something greater overtakes notions of the essential and the other. Sexy Films? I would keep this concept separate from that of ‘sex films,’ as some of the most memorable film moments that come to mind are those that avoided physical contact all together. In terms of French films I’m thinking of Daniel Auteuil throwing knifes at an excited Vanessa Paradis in ‘La Fille sur le Pont.’ Sure, the woman is playing the passive role once again, but it’s certainly more interesting than the scene involving her character Adele shagging a random in a phone box earlier in the film.

Similarly the electricity is flying when hardened criminal Paul (Vincent Cassel) catches an accidental glimpse down the shirt of his deaf boss Carla (Emmanuelle Devos) in ‘Sur mes Lévres.’ Tension builds to a climax as we wait to see the outcome of these two opposites who are thrown together, each learning something new from the other.

As a straight woman, I must say that it’s not just about heterosexual romances either. There is something absolutely compelling about the journey of the dying gay protagonist Romain, in François Ozon’s ‘Le temps qui reste.’ Having left behind his sexy grandmother (Jeanne Moreau) with the promise that they will both find death soon, Romain goes forth into a threesome, doing his bit to help impregnate a sterile young couple. Maybe it’s his distance from the other characters or his closeness to dying that makes this as memorable as it is.

So thumbs down to gratuitous nudity, sexual violence and soft porn.
